Moisio School
Moisio School is a comprehensive school (pupils aged 13-16) in Salo, southern Finland with some
460 pupils and 30 teachers. It is one of the three lower secondary schools in Salo. After leaving Moisio School half of the pupils go on to upper secondary school (high school) and half to vocational level.
There are some major changes going on right now. A new annex is being built at the back of the
school building to welcome an extra 120 pupils together with some ten teachers starting from August 2014.
The variety of subjects is broad (as in all the Finnish schools) following the national curriculum. On top of the national curriculum our specialty is information technology and music. There is a special line for both the subjects through the three years at Moisio. The language programme is also extensive: the pupils’ time table consists of compulsory English and Swedish with German, French and Spanish as optional courses.
On the average one pupil has 30 lessons per week. These 30 lessons are the same for all the
seventh formers. The 8th and 9th formers’time tables include 6-7 lessons of optional courses for example business studies, home economics, extra courses on music and arts and extra languages.
The school is operated together by the town and state and gets its funding mainly from the
town. Still the school and teachers are very independent and have very little control from the state.
The school is not only lessons. There are various activities going on during the school year that are arranged by the pupils themselves. The pupils form a student council with a representative from each class. It is a council where they have a word on school activities and can propose new ideas for the every day routine of the school.
Peer counselling is also a big thing. Specially trained pupils of this group deal with and solve
problematic situations when they arise among the fellow pupils. Sometimes a peer pupil is more easily approachable than a teacher.
